The El Presidente cocktail is a drink built with white Rum, orange curacao, and French dry Vermouth.
El Presidente Cocktail Info
The El Presidente cocktail is a Cuban creation first created in the early 1900s. It was likely named after President Mario Garcia Menocal, who governed the country between 1913 and 1921.
Cuba was a popular destination for Americans during that period. After Prohibition, the popularity grew even more, when many thirsty Yankees came to Havana looking for sunshine and good cocktails. The Mojito and the Daiquiri are two of the most popular drinks from the island.
American drinkers brought back the El Presidente after the 13-year Prohibition period. However, like many classics, it almost died during the second half of the century. In the early aughts, it was revived by historians and curious bartenders who looked back to the past for inspiration.
Simon Ford, a renowned bartender and spirit pro, created this recipe. Although it makes a delicious, balanced cocktail, many bartenders have tweaked the El Presidente recipe over the years. For more body, you can use a richly white or aged rum. A blanc style vermouth is semi-dry and slightly sweet, so that would work great as well. It's the same style as the original. If you feel the cocktail has too much orange, reduce the curacao. Many options are available, so experiment until you find the perfect El Presidente.
