Hotel Nacional De Cuba Cocktail History

Famous hotels often take center stage in the history of drinking. Singapore's Raffles Hotel in Singapore invented the Singapore Sling. Bartenders at Hotel Ritz Paris made the first Mimosa. The Hotel Nacional de Cuba created one of the all-time great summer cocktails.

The Hotel opened in 1930 and it was one of the most glamorous hideaways in the early 20th century. It served as a temporary residence for a glittering set. Ava Gardner, Lucky Luciano, and luminaries like Winston Churchill and Nat King Cole stayed at the hotel.

Bartenders today love and praise the drink as a "cure-all" a secret weapon that they can use when no other options work because everyone loves it.

Jeffrey Morgenthaler, the owner of Portland's award-winning bars Clyde Common and Pepe Le Moko, said that it is refreshing, light, fruity, and subtle, and I agree. The cocktail is a favorite of his and now a favorite of mine. It appeals to many people, so both your hardcore rum-drinking man or your frivolous college girl will enjoy this cocktail."
